What happened to the Internet?

Tuesday, May 27th, 2014

I had every intent of jumping in the car and heading out to Wal-mart to get some stuff for the house, but unfortunately Mother Nature has decided to open the skies and increase the volume.  So since I’m stuck on the couch until the storm passes, I figured I’d take a few minutes to finally blog.  It also doesn’t help that Bella is terrified of thunder storms, and if you even say the phrase “Boom boom!” she’ll hide in the nearest tight spot she can get herself into. Right now? She’s between me and the back of the couch and that’s pretty much where she’s going to stay until she feels a change in the atmosphere.  I also would feel terrible leaving her by herself during a storm due to the cuddle factor involved with her anxiety.

Anyhow… I got into a long conversation with Arwen today about random things and the one thing we both agree on is the fact that the Internet, as we O.Gs remember it, is nothing like it used to be. There was a time when people heavily focused on personal websites, not micro blogging and social media. Sure, we all had MySpace accounts but the focus was always on regular blogging, constant theme updating and spending the time going through hundreds of thousands of links to comment on other personal blogs. There was also the perk of Internet Drama between different cliques to keep the hits coming. I’ll admit, I bought into that quite frequently but that ended almost 10 years ago and that’s that.

What always amused me was the amount of money spent on domain names just so you could host other people for free, at a time when webhosting was crazy expensive.  Now? You can buy a domain and hosting for $10-$20 a year but everyone prefers to utilize WordPress.com, Tumblr, or even skip blogging all together and just constantly update their Twitter accounts because “Microblogging” is just the way to be. I’ve also found that quite a few people who no longer Blog are now Vlogging. OK, so it might be easier to just talk to a camera to get your thoughts out, but why is no one capable of READING anymore? I remember seeing an episode of “Two Broke Girls” where Max said something that instantly clicked, and made me laugh so hard I almost wet my pants.  “Twitter is dumb, and Instagram is for people who can’t read”.  This statement, while it was just meant as a joke, is 100% true.  You’ll see more selfies and hashtags floating around the internet than you’ll ever see blog articles.  And why? Why is the instant gratification of a picture or video taking precedence over reading?

How many original bloggers are still floating around and actually updating their sites? Yes, I know I’m guilty of not blogging for quite some time, but life does take the precedence over Internet too.  Are there any of the older blogrolls floating around that house ANY active sites?  If I knew there was more of a ‘market’ for it I’d bring back a site like Provance or Despair so that there was at least three new people per-day that would give me the drive to not only read/comment on their sites, but the drive to focus more on mine as well.

I think the issue for me, is still life. The list of 20-something bloggers has now turned into 30-something bloggers who all have jobs and/or children that keep them from doing anything but reading recipes and searching for make-it-yourself toys/crafts for your children. The ‘break’ from that would be posting pictures of whatever you cooked or your child created onto Instagram, which then updates your Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr simultaneously to keep you ‘connected’.  But, why is no one connected to a ‘diary’ type of thing anymore? Isn’t that what the original blogs were really meant for? Yea, ok so a picture is still a glimpse into your world… but for some reason I feel that my brain works better on the descriptive level… that’s all.

Blogging while Driving…

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

OK, so I’m not actually the one driving but today was one of those days where I had no choice but to boot up my slowly dying laptop and bring it with me.  This morning we woke up to find out that Karen wasn’t going to her Chemo treatment today because of super high blood pressure and the lack of ability to breath.  We wound up going to the cancer center so she could have the IV removed from her arm (they leave it in cause she goes three days in a row and its a pain to have to redo the IV every time).  We both went home for a little while to get some food in our systems and now all three of us (Karen, Sean and myself) are heading up to Christiana Hospital up in Newark for a kind of “rushed” visit to her cardiologist.  She’s to a point where she’s no longer going to be doing the Chemo (based on her choice) due to the uncomfortable and concerning side effects.  She’s done 3.5 of 4 treatments, and that’s where things are going to end I guess.  She’s a grown woman who can make her own choices, and she has.

So why am I even online?  Welp, I’m trying to complete a site by the Wednesday AM deadline but still have about 8 hours work to complete, knowing that we’re going to be out of the house for at least another six hours, I had no choice in the matter.  Thankfully my cellphone gives me the ability to “hotspot” myself so it’s been pretty easy to keep the pace of coding and uploading without worrying about anything. Thank god for 4G.

Hittin the fan!

So far things have been relatively productive today, I’ve gone through all of my email, drew up about five mock-ups and now I’m sitting here with a huge list of things to do beside me.  Sean and I are both in the living room this afternoon because we’re watching season 1 of “Shameless”.  It’s one of our newest addictions and unfortunately we were only able to watch it from the beginning of Season 2 on Showtime.  So since there are numerous questions that needed answers, we’re going to watch everything from the beginning so we can catch ourselves up.  By the time we’re in the mood to move forward we can watch Season 2 all over again, in anticipation for Season 3 (which they’ll be filming soon anyway).

Anyhoo… you’ll notice on the sidebar that Muir’s widget has been added to the blog pages, she’ll be posting here soon, so for now her link obviously goes to a dead page, but it’ll be active soon enough.  She just left here a little while ago, the little munchkin was fussy this afternoon but after a nice half hour nap on the couch, and a ten minute doze on auntie Krissy’s shoulder – it mellowed out quite a bit.

Dinner went very well last night.  The lamb tasted pretty good, my only complaint was the fact that I can’t – for the life of me – get the garlic smell off of my hands, no matter how hard I try. I’ve watched my hands constantly with numerous different variations of soaps and wives-tale tricks but nothings really worked.  I’m hoping within the next few days it just goes away naturally.  I can honestly say that the reason us Italians talk with our hands is nothing to do with a social tick, it’s children watching their grandparents constantly try to air out their hands.

So I’m looking over my list and there’s at least 15 tasks to complete (or at least put a dent in today).  Guess the next few hours are gonna be busy as hell.

Happy New Year

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

So it’s officially 2011 and so far things haven’t been too bad. I’m working very hard to get myself on track as there are a lot of things I’m interested in doing this year that require a lot of attention to detail, and stamina to get through them. I’ve actively been searching for a new job, working hard to try to get myself up to speed with the new requirements as far as web design are concerned. Over the course of the next few days it’s my goal to have a new hand-made template up, as opposed to the freebies I’ve been using for the past year. My links list is very short, so I’m also working on finding some new interesting sites to push into a regular routine as well. Another big thing for me is to throw myself fully into the paid blogging world again as I haven’t been into it for so long that my resources are limited. Once I can regain some traffic to any of my sites I’ll work on getting the financial aspect of things back on track as well.

Sean and I are doing great, we haven’t argued and are finally in the relationship we’ve both wanted for a very long time. We veered off a little and now we’re back on track and couldn’t be happier. We went away for new years weekend and enjoyed every minute of it. It made us realize how badly we need to get into a better place with our relationship and we’re both working very hard to get there. This is exactly why I’m feverishly searching for alternate income and really working on finding a better 9-5 so I can be done with the shit hole I’ve been in for the past few years. I’m actually taking a break from searching through job sites just so I can update here since I hadn’t done it in so long.

I changed back to an older theme for the time being as the Christmas season is over. I had a wonderful Christmas, Sean picked out a gorgeous necklace for me that I’m absolutely in love with, I’m also overloaded on new clothes and DVD’s, even older items that were on my amazon list for god knows how long. The biggest YAY moment for me was unpacking my new Kureg Coffee Maker, I’m head over heals in love with it as I’ve wanted it for so long! I already picked up a 24 pack of my uber favorite French Vanilla blend and can’t wait to try out all of the other ones. I’ve been addicted to flavored coffee for quite some time now, and now I have the option of doing it all from home instead of dropping money in random coffee shops around my house, and my job. It’s great for iced coffee too by the way, there’s even iced tea mixes and the lovely hot chocolate flavors which should just be a requirement considering the weather lately. Ugh, even talking about it here is making me want a large cup of coffee lol.

I’m taking even more of a break from reality by hanging out at the train station people watching. I have my netbook in my purse and thanks to our local internet carrier, wifi is pretty much free no matter where I go, the strongest feed is down at the train station for some reason, but I’m sure that has something o do with all of the metal on the ground in front of me. A few people floating around down here are amusing the living hell out of me though. I’m amazed at how dumb teenagers have become since I was one, I know my friends were stupid, don’t get me wrong – but they were never this bad. One of these pricks watches way too much jackass and is looking to see if his tongue will freeze to the tracks, or at least boasting that he’s willing to try it. The sadistic person inside of me wants to see him get his tongue stuck and run over by a train. The “mom/cop” in me wants to zap him with a tazer and watch him squirm in the grass safely away from the rails. Damn me and my caring nature, lol!

In any event, based on my little word counter I’m up in the 750 range which means I’ve been hard-core typing for a good 10-15 minutes and have no idea what my initial point was for even starting this entry.

Hope everyone enjoyed their holiday season!
